On Friday, Josh lost his sunglasses while jumping off the dock into Big Lake. Four people in our group tried diving down to retrieve them. The water was about twelve feet deep and murky green down in the seaweed. Three tires resided on the bottom. Everyone except Josh’s daughter Daela abandoned the search. She retrieved better goggles from her car and after a few more tries, she surfaced holding a pair of sunglasses aloft to great applause from a half dozen witnesses. But the glasses did not belong to Josh. They were lost last week by Jake. Josh put them on and texted a photo to Jake. Daela resumed diving and emerged with another pair of sunglasses. The growing crowd went wild. But they did not belong to Josh either! They were immediately identified as my son Matt’s glasses. I know the sun gets in your eyes but I began to wonder why people wear sunglasses in swimming or floating in the lake when they get lost so easily. I was also amazed how everyone seemed to remember who wore which sunglasses. They all look pretty much the same to me. Daela continued her search. She could hold her breath a really long time. Originally I thought the mission was doomed but now joked about almost expecting Daela to come up with another pair. I was absolutely stunned when she did in fact emerge with her dad’s sunglasses. We thought she should start diving off neighboring docks to see what else she could find. Maybe I am easily impressed but on Saturday I told Daela this post was bumping one about how I can wiggle my ears. Then she deflated me with the news that all three salvaged sunglasses were already lost again somewhere on land.
Sunglasses should be made like goggles and strapped on so you never lose them – though they might not project quite the image those who buy expensive βshadesβ aim for!

Yes, they all mock me because I strap on goggles when I swim in the lake but I never lose them.

I wear sunglasses in the water because I am friggin’ blind and need them — prescription! If I ever lose them I am calling her!

You are very brave to take prescription glasses into the water. The first thing I asked Josh when he lost his sunglasses was whether they were prescription (they were not) because that would make the loss so much greater.

I agree most sunglassed looked the same, not all. It is really amazing how she retrieved so many! I’d have loved to see it π

Everyone recognizes my sunglasses, probably because I buy them at the Dollar Store, along with my reading glasses. You never have to worry about losing or breaking stuff from the Dollar Store!

I usually get Dollar Store sunglasses but one time I went uptown and bought a pair at Walmart for $5. That was the pair I lost.

Of course, that is a rule of nature. You should try buying a $200 pair of sunglasses and see what happens.

If I had $200 I just can’t imagine parting with it for a pair of sunglasses, sorry.

I can’t either but maybe if we live long enough and inflation gains more momentum, we might have $200 Stores instead of Dollar Stores.
