Some words can be received as insults or compliments depending on the recipient. I would be flattered to be a one trick pony or a one hit wonder. But two trick ponies and two hit wonders look down on me. St. Thomas Aquinas reportedly used the words “hominem unius libri timeo” to express his fear of “the man of only one book” as an intellectual opponent who has mastered one single discipline. Variations on this thought have been attributed to others but today the term “one book” person is generally considered an insult. Still, one book is better than none. And a one horse town is presumably better than a no horse town unless you are allergic to horses. I am not even sure where a one pony town ranks. The world of pen and paper gets so very complicated. In the hierarchy of paper, newspaper and wallpaper used to outrank toilet paper. But the reverse seems true today. Now you can be the master of many books and never touch a piece of paper. I get excited just thinking how I am only one post away from being anointed a one Blog wonder. I always write to the music of One Fine Day by the Chiffons. I have over rehearsed one witty routine for my appearance on Good Morning America. And I have laid out my one dark suit and striped tie to wear at my Oprah interview.
LOL. Want to witness your witty routine with Good Morning America or Oprah interview. LOL. Dark suit and striped tie. I hear you. It somehow reminds me of the interview of Kramer (from Seinfeld) for his coffee table book with Good Morning America. LOL.
