My wife’s Aunt Marge was affiliated with the Carmelite Monastery of Seattle, so we have made a few donations in her memory. This puts us on many more mailing lists. We just received a solicitation for an online auction to support Discalced Carmelite Friars in California. I had to look up the word discalced which my Blog draft underlines in red as something I need to correct. The word has been off putting for me because dis seems to connote something negative like disgraced or disbarred. Are these defrocked Friars? As a lifelong Catholic, I am embarrassed by my ignorance which I am parading through this Blog as penance. Apparently discalced only means going barefoot or wearing sandals. So the Friars are just hippies and I get good vibrations from hippie nomenclature. I think the Discalced Friars should update their name to attract more donations. Hippies are too controversial. I would suggest Barefoot Friars to inspire an image of a humble brotherhood not concerned with worldly goods. But since my ignorance is also polarizing, I merely propose a fundraising contest to pick the new name.
